Language is a funny thing. Gerlinde, Dietmar, Martin and Jürgen are my current and gracious hosts in the small village of Talheim. Gerlinde and I have had so many conversations over breakfasts of pretzels and tea and long walks in vineyards and forests. Her favorite topic of conversation is language and the meaning of words. I’ve nearly learned more about my own culture as I have the German culture.
We’ve clarified a few things: “I am full” is not a rude comment, to be greedy is not a good thing and in California we don’t call ourselves “C.A.”
I’m also delighted to announce, that for once in a country I can, at times, follow the conversation! Mom, those two years of a high school German weren’t a complete waste!
